Rauðisandur Beach in Iceland’s remote Westfjords is unlike any place I’ve ever been. The drive there is intense, with narrow, winding roads that challenge even the most experienced drivers like myself. But the destination makes every hairpin turn worthwhile.

What struck me most about Rauðisandur wasn’t just the stunning expanse of red and golden sands stretching out to the horizon. It was the sound. I initially planned to capture the gentle lapping of waves on the shore, but the true essence of this place is in the wind. The wind here isn’t just a background noise; it’s a powerful, almost overwhelming presence that sweeps across the beach, filling your ears and soul with its relentless energy.

Standing on Rauðisandur, I felt the vast emptiness and raw beauty of the landscape. The sound of the wind, fierce and all-encompassing, became the perfect soundtrack to this wild and untamed corner of the world. It’s a humbling reminder of nature’s power, making me feel both insignificant and incredibly alive.

In the end, capturing the overwhelming wind felt like the only way to truly convey the spirit of Rauðisandur Beach. It’s a soundscape that will stay with me long after I’ve left, a reminder of the wild beauty and raw power of the Westfjords.

  1. The road to Rauðisandur is rewarded by an utterly unique environment – although it was entirely still and peaceful when I was there last!
