To record the singing of puffins, you have to go to the other end of Iceland – to the town of Borgarfjörður eystri. It is a fjord far to the northeast, and is a full day’s drive from Reykjavik. Altogether, with a few other places, it was 1500 kilometers in two and a half days, sleeping in the open air, drinking water from mountain rivers … collecting field recordings can be a beautiful adventure. Puffins visit Iceland between June and August. They depart for the winter to… the, among others, Canary Islands! Their characteristic voice attracts everyone’s attention, which you will hear about in the conversations of tourists recorded during this meeting. If you listen closely, you can hear the puffins singing in the dialogues. One gives the melodies and the others respond to it.
